Professionals and housewives, who want to pursue higher education, cannot go for campus education because of their respective personal priorities. Distance learning universities give them the opportunity to balance both work and education.

Following are some of the top notch open universities in India:

1. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is one of the best correspondence universities available in India. They started their operation in 1987 with initial student strength of 4,528. But the current student strength has swelled to more than 4 million. Indira Gandhi National Open University encompasses twenty one schools of studies, sixty seven oversees centers, thirty six thousand academic counselors, sixty seven networks of regional centers, around four hundred and twenty academic staffs and faculty members. Providing excellence of education through correspondence is their aim. Some of the units to mention here are BAASLS (BA in Applied Sign Language Studies), CTKS (Centre for Traditional Knowledge Systems), CBLLC (Centre for Bhojpuri Language, Literature and Culture), ACIIL (Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning), and many more.

 2. University of Mumbai [Institute Of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL)] It started its operations from 1971-72. IDOL provides educational programs such as M.Sc. in Mathematics, PGDFM, B.Sc in information technology, MA, BA, B.Sc in Nautical Technology, B.Com and many more. Quality of education in this university is very high, evident from the 5 star rating it received from UGC NAAC. It is one of the top distance learning universities in the country.

 3. Sikkim Manipal University is situated in the north east of India and is a university in the public-private partnership model. In fact, in that region, it was the first ever such initiative. The partnership involved Government of Sikkim, on one hand, and Manipal Education (a private entity), on the other. This distance learning university is approved by Government of India and recognized by UGC. It needs special mention that DEC (Distance Education Council) recognizes distance education.
